At least thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
