EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.

  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
