Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to contest certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
